I’m going to go a touch off the deep end here guys, but honesty is the best policy right?
I don’t believe in New Years resolutions. There, I said it.
I don’t have ANY resolutions for 2018 to get all exited about tomorrow.
Do I have resolutions or goals at all? Hell yah I do. I have lots. I just didn’t schedule them for January first.
It’s something I picked up 4 years ago when I was struggling to lose weight to qualify for bariatric surgery.
See, I would screw up on a Friday afternoon and eat a candy bar or something. Well, now I need to start all over, and who starts a diet on a Saturday? I’ll re-start Monday.
We like to do the same thing for most of our goals. How many times have you said something like;
“I’ll start saving money next month.”
“I’m going to start working out next week.”
“On New Years I’m going to start trying to lose weight.”
You don’t need a new anything to begin something
When I was talking to my nutritionist about these weekend lapses she said the silliest thing to me.
“You don’t need to start a diet on a Monday, you can start change at any moment you want.”
It was so simple and true that it knocked that mentality right out of me.
If I ate something I shouldn’t I owned up to the lapse and re-started my eating plan right away. One moment of weakness didn’t turn into days of gorging and I had far better results in my diet.
I’ve found the same habits help with any other goal. Unless something is pending outside action (like payday) I start it as soon as possible. If that means 2pm on a Wednesday, so be it.
Every day, every hour and every minute is new. We don’t need to wait for the start of anything to begin something, we just have to begin it!
Tomorrow welcomes in 2018, and yes, it’s a new start. A new year, new month and this year even a new week all in one!
That doesn’t mean we need to wait until tomorrow to start anything though. Or that if we don’t start tomorrow we need to wait for another starting point.
Tomorrow I will be working toward my goals with just as much conviction as I have today, and had yesterday.
All that being said, I do hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Years Day!
Celebrate everything you accomplished in 2017 and everything you will do next year. Enjoy the day!
Then enjoy the next day, and the one after that.
Celebrate every new day with the same level of commitment and appreciation as you do on New Years, because every day is a new start!
